Biography

Stephen H. Unger was born in 1931 in New York City. He graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and received his ScD from MIT, and was Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. Unger was instrumental in the foundation of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology, and the Stephen Unger collection, donated to the IEEE Archives, is one of the most extensive collections of primary documents pertaining to the IEEE's involvement in ethics. Unger was the author of the books Asynchronous Sequential Switching Circuits (1983), The Essence of Logic Circuits (1997), and Controlling Technology: Ethics and the Responsible Engineer (1994). Unger died on July 4th, 2023.
