Biography

Bruce Collipp and two coworkers invented the semisubmersible drilling rig. He and his colleagues's work in the 1950s and 1960s made possible the creation of a new generation of mobile drilling vessels that were capable of operating in deep water under harsh conditions. Collipp, who worked for Shell Oil for 33 years, received the Distinguished Achievement Award at the 2002 OTC for his contributions. He was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 1991.
